Overview

The Flagtail Grunt Kuhlia mugil is a hardy and active marine fish. Also known as the Barred Flagtail or Five Band Flagtail, it is found in nature along the edges of reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. It has a longer oval silver body with compressed sides. The caudal fin is forked and has alternating bands of horizontal stripes in black and white. This Flagtail can grow to sixteen inches maximum, but more commonly a size of ten inches. Though groups of Flagtail Grunts form schools in nature, keeping schools of them in an aquarium is not feasible, due to their size.

This Grunt requires an aquarium of at least 180 gallons, water salinity in the range of 1.020-1.025, temperatures from 72° F to 78° F, pH ranging from 8.1-8.4, and water hardness in the range of 8-12 dKH.

This member of the Kuhliidae family is a nocturnal feeder in nature. In the aquarium, it will feed on zooplankton and small meaty fish food when it is offered, either day or night.
