Overview

The Pachyseris Coral is also known as the Elephant Skin Coral, Corduroy Coral and Castle Coral. Unlike most small polyp stony (SPS) corals, this coral does not have any visible polyps or tentacles. This coral develops many ridges and valleys that run parallel to the growing edge of the coral, giving it an appearance that is very similar to elephant skin.

The Pachyseris Coral will need a high light level and placement at mid-level or higher in the aquarium with a high water movement. Because this coral does not use polyps or tentacles for feeding, the proper lighting level needs to be supplied for its proper nutrition. For continued good health, it will require the addition of calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water.

It is theorized that this coral may obtain some nutrition through mucosal capture of particulate matter. Therefore, this coral may benefit from the addition of phytoplankton a few times per week.
