Overview

The Pom Pom Crab is white to tan in coloration and has darker markings covering the body which serve as camouflage for the crab. This crab carries an anemone in each claw which it uses for defense. Besides defense, the crab will also use the anemones to mop up food off of the rocks and substrate.

The Pom Pom Crab is an interesting addition to an aquarium with its anemones in each hand. It raises these anemones at would be predators and aids in cleaning the aquarium of any left over food and detritus. Caution should be used when adding this crab to a reef aquarium as the anemones could sting sessile invertebrates and corals. The damage that could potentially be caused by these tiny anemones that come on each claw would be minimal due to their very tiny size.

The diet of the Pom Pom Crab should include meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped fish and clams.

Great little guys that are very shy. If you put them in a large tank don't be surprised if you rarely see them. Sometimes they lose an anemone. Make sure your tank can support an anemone before buying one of these guys as their 'pom poms' are little anemones.

This was a perfect addition to my 2.5g mini reef. They stay small. They do tend to hide a LOT even in a tank with no predators. While they say these are easy to care for, also remember that they carry anemones and you will want your water quality good enough to support them too. I suggest that their care level be considered MEDIUM. If the anemenes become stressed and die, the crab will go on, but I have never seen them find new anemones. I have never had anemones breed to make little baby ones for the crab to grab onto. Once gone, the crab will become even more reclusive since it won't have its major defensive shields for confidence.
