Overview

Due to its availability, and combined with the relatively low cost, these Banded Cat Sharks are the most common shark kept in an aquarium.

As an adult, it requires at least a 360 gallon or larger aquarium. It requires sand as the substrate in the aquarium, as the abdomen is easily scratched by a coarser substrate, thus causing infection. It should never be exposed to copper-based medications. It will eat any crustacean in the aquarium.

The hatching time of the egg will be anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks depending on the stage of development and the environmental conditions in the aquarium. When hatched, offer small pieces of cleaned squid or live saltwater feeder shrimp in order to entice this fish to eat. Then it may be fed shrimp, scallops or pieces of fresh marine fish.

Approximate Purchase Size: 2-3/4" to 3-1/2"

Please note: We guarantee that ALL aquaria species we offer will arrive alive and in good condition. However, because of the increased level of care required for this particular species, it has been designated as "Expert Only." This species is recommended only for the expert aquarist, zoo, or research institution. “Expert Only” aquatic life is exempt from our extended guarantee after their arrival.

Customer Testimonials

Eddie A Mooresville , NC
The best way to order this shark is in the egg form. I tried very unsuccessfully to buy this shark alive and they just will not eat. When ordered as an egg it takes very well to the aquarium when it is born because it is the only way of life it knows. Frozen squid works the best to encourage eating. Be sure to feed small pieces of food in the beginning because their mouth is very small. I hand feed mine.

I hatched one of these in my tank and it is doing great. Don't expect it to come out of hiding right away because they are very shy. I fed mine frozen shrimp off a shishkabob stick and he really likes being fed but now, since he is about 2 weeks old, I've started feeding him some pellet food along with the shrimp.
Steve S Ventura , CA
My egg was torn open by an urchin and was a premi but against all odds survived and has been doing great ever since eating and growing very fast. It does not seem to mind the light and spends most of the day out with the rest of my fish in my reef tank
