Overview

The adult Emperor Angelfish, also called the Imperator Angelfish, has a bold, blue body covered with bright yellow horizontal stripes culminating in a bright yellow to orange caudal fin. A striking blue-black mask covers the eyes and a similarly-colored vertical band extends from the pectoral fin two-thirds of the way up the body. This band is highlighted in a sapphire-blue in front, and bright yellow, caudally. The mouth is white.

The juvenile is black with circular white and blue stripes starting at the tail. Although sought after for its colors, in captivity, the adult coloration may not be as striking or brilliant. The changing angelfish will vary in coloration and pattern as it transforms from juvenile to the adult coloration.

The Emperor Angelfish requires a 220 gallon or larger tank with live rock for grazing and hiding. They also require extensive rockwork and deep caves to feel secure. It will nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles, but may be kept with small-polyped stony corals and somewhat noxious soft corals.

It should be fed a diet of Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis or frozen shrimp, and other meaty items.

Absolutely beautiful showcase fish as juvenile or adult. Careful adding to tanks with aggressive fish as delicate in regards to "ich" breakouts. Good eaters & best added as juveniles.

Very pretty fish. Became acclimated in no time. Has a lot of personality and is a great fish for both beginners and experts.

I got a emperor angelfish when its was about 5in no he is about 6.5in to 7in. The angelfish loves to be the center of attintion and makes loud grunting noises all the time. but that depends on there size. I not recomened with really little fish but with more medium sized fish. I love that fish it loves to eat.

I bought a Adult Emperor medium size. He is just like the picture. He started eating on his first day in the tank and is VERY healthy. Foster and Smith is the only place to buy fish with a guaranttee like they have for expensive fish.

I lost the beautiful Red Sea Emperor Angelfish a few months ago. I’d had her for almost 20 years. I purchased another healthy Emperor from Dr. Foster & Smith recently. They are a very hardy fish as far as you provide with liverocks with a few caves, high water quality, and a variety of foods, such as krills, OSI flakes, Hikari Seaweed Extreme and Marine A pellets. Those healthy foods help an angel building a strong immune system as well as keeping a beautiful color.

Second order from this site and this fish is beautiful. First day and he is swimming with tank mates an eating like a piraña.

As always, Liveaquaria never disappoints. I was fearful of adding a juvenile Emporer to my aquarium. I bought a large one to give it the best chance possible of defending itself against the current tankmates for introduction. My Sailfin Tang and Yellow Tang had a tizzy fit for the first 2 hours after the Emporer was introduced. But the angelfish held his own and didn't let the drama bother him. The emporer arrived brightly colored and healthy! Only took 2 days for him to eat the frozen food I feed the tank. And on day 4, he started to eat from the veggie clips. He's in a 225 gallon reef, and will definitely need that space to grow into. Each time i approach the tank, he comes up to the front panel and greets me. AWESOME ADDITION! Highly recommend. Thanks Liveaquaria.
