Overview

The Red Pearl Sword Plant is a popular new variety of Echinodorus Sword Plant with many attractive features sure to appeal to most freshwater planted aquarium hobbyists. Similar in care to most Echinodorus Sword Plants, the Red Pearl Sword Plant is relatively easy to care for, features decorative foliage with eye-catching red markings, and boasts a compact growth habit. Growing to about 9" tall, this "well-behaved" Echinodorus Sword Plant makes a fantastic plant for aquariums of all sizes including smaller aquariums and nano aquariums. Depending on the size of your aquarium, the versatile Red Pearl Sword Plant can be employed as a foreground, midground, or background plant to beautiful effect.

Care and planting requirements of the Red Pearl Sword Plant are similar to other Echinodorus species. The Red Pearl Sword Plant should be planted directly into the substrate, making sure to bury the root structure but keeping the crown of the plant free of substrate. The Red Pearl Sword Plant is a heavy root feeder so consider fortifying the substrate with a gravel bed supplement.

In the home aquarium, the Red Pearl Sword Plant reproduces by adventitious plantlets, side shoots, and rhizome division. Simply allow the plant to reproduce by one of the above methods, and when the new plant forms its own leaves, separate and re-plant in another location of the aquarium. For the most eye-catching and "natural" display in the aquarium, plant the Red Pearl Sword Plant singly, scattered throughout the aquarium.

The Red Pearl Sword Plant does well when provided full spectrum (5000°K-7000°K) lighting of moderate to high intensity. Though typically a moderately slow-growing plant, under ideal growing conditions with CO2 supplementation and balanced fertilization, the Red Pearl Sword Plant will demonstrate faster growth.
