Overview

The Black Neon Albino Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) has unique coloring – a lack of pigmentation. Sporting a translucent head and body in silvery white with black neon fins, it displays the characteristic Albino feature of red eyes. A great schooling fish, they should be kept in groups of 5 or more.

With their peaceful temperaments, Black Neon Albino Tetras can be kept in a community tank with other peaceful fish who will not eat them. Because of their size, an ideal aquarium set up is one that will include live plants, driftwood, rocks, and floating plants to provide shade and hiding spaces, which gives them a sense of security. A smaller Tetra, this freshwater fish can make a comfortable home in tanks of 10 gallons or larger. As with other Neon Tetras, they do best when water parameters are kept constant.

This Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi prefers more acidic water when breeding. Females spawn in the open water leaving the eggs available for the male to fertilize. Eggs hatch in 24 to 30 hours after fertilization. You may want to consider using a breeding box so you can remove the adults after fertilization to keep them from eating their eggs. Even if both parents are of the Albino variety, there is no guarantee that all the fish will carry the Albino coloration.

An omnivore, the Black Neon Albino Tetra will accept many small foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia, freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex, micro pellet food, and a high quality flake food.
