Overview

Onion Snails Vittina natalensis are efficient scavengers ideal for freshwater aquariums and are a popular choice because they keep uneaten food and algae in check. Peaceful snails, they will not unexpectedly overpopulate your aquarium or water garden since they do not reproduce in freshwater.

Onion snails present themselves with a reddish-brown shell containing black dots. Not only eye-catching, they provide beneficial qualities that help to keep the aquarium clean by consuming algae on plants and throughout the aquarium. These algae eaters are especially fond of Green Spot Algae. Adult snails can live up to 3 years in captivity under the right conditions.

They are hardy and grow to 2” in length. A lidded aquarium is recommended, to keep these little snails from escaping. Because they like to burrow, sand and soil substrates are the best choices for this snail.

Scavengers, this member of the Neritidae family will consume debris, uneaten food, and algae in the pond or aquarium. If insufficient food is present, they should receive supplements of algae wafers.
