Overview

The Eight Banded Butterflyfish Chaetodon octofasciatus, is also known as the Eight Stripe Butterflyfish. It is one of the smallest Butterflyfish, growing up to a maximum of 5” in captivity. With a slender profile that helps it hide among coral branches in nature, it casts quite a beautiful appearance in a saltwater aquarium with its yellow body that contains eight black vertical stripes.

In the aquarium, this marine fish requires plenty of places to hide, like in live rock, and a large area in which to swim. This member of the Chaetodontidae family is generally peaceful, but it is not reef safe because it feeds on coral polyps and crustaceans and nibbles on Tridacna clams.

it is also one of the most difficult fish to keep because it is a corallivore. Its care is suited to an expert level aquarist.
