Overview
The Berlin Swordtail (believed to be named after the capital of Germany where they were originally bred) will make a fantastic addition to your freshwater aquarium. They are an active fish that will add immediate visual interest to your water environment with their showy red bodies with irregularly distributed black dots and spots, and the distinguishing large swordtail feature in males. In their natural environment, Swordtails make their homes in rapidly flowing streams and rivers, and because of this active nature, we recommend a tank size of twenty gallons or more with a secured cover.
This stock is an easy choice for those who want to build an interesting environment quickly. With a peaceful temperament, Berlin Swordtails grow to four inches in length and are easy to keep. However, males can get territorial and exhibit some aggression towards one another, so care should be taken to monitor or separate them.
Berlin Swordtails are omnivores who like vegetated environments and are at home in freshwater environments. They feed on commercially prepared flaked foods and algae as well as freeze dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp.
The Berlin Swordtail is a live-bearing freshwater fish, and a female Berlin Swordtail can give birth to as many as 80 fry at one time. Unless it is your intention to breed Berlin Swordtail, the male Swordtail fry should be separated once the sex of the fry is determined. If you do wish to breed them, a spawning box is recommended. If one if not available, provide a dense floating cover to protect the swordtail fry from potential predation by the adults.
Live Aquaria® is excited to offer the Berlin Swordtail and add it to our growing Swordtail fish category. With their easy nature, diverse color varieties, and distinctive tails, Swordtail fish are becoming increasingly popular.
