Overview
Live corals are important contributors to the structure of a saltwater reef in nature as well as in reef aquariums. Our Certified Captive Grown Coral Aquacultured Red and Green Favia Coral (Favia sp.) are grown by our dedicated Wisconsin staff at our own LiveAquaria® facility. We are committed to providing healthy and attractive alternatives to wild caught specimens, so as not to contribute to the world’s declining coral reefs.
The Green and Red Favia Coral is a unique color variety with segmented areas displaying green ruffled borders edging each segment and contrasting red polyp centers. The Red and Green Favia Coral is a type of LPS coral often referred to as Pineapple Coral, Brain Coral, Closed Brain Coral, or Honeycomb Coral.
Favia corals are aggressive, expanding their sweeper tentacles at night well beyond their base. It is important to leave space between them and their neighbors in the reef aquarium. Caring for Favia corals is relatively easy, making them excellent choices for the beginner to expert reef hobbyist.
The Red and Green Favia Coral will satisfy the majority of its nutritional requirements by means of photosynthetic, symbiotic zooxanthellae algae hosted within the body. However, they will benefit from the addition of supplemental food in the form of micro-plankton or brine shrimp.
Hobbyists who use our LiveAquaria® Professional Reef Salt have the added benefit of knowing marine species shipped from our Wisconsin Facility share the same water parameters. In other words, if you use our Professional Reef Salt, marine species shipped from our Wisconsin Facility will acclimate and transition to your home aquarium with less stress to set the foundation for longer term success.
For continued good health, these corals will require the addition of supplemental calcium, magnesium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water, with medium water flow and moderate lighting. These are shipped on a ceramic plug so you can easily place them securely in or between the rockwork in your reef aquarium.
