Overview
The Black Eared Tang Acanthurus maculiceps is a marine fish whose look grows more interesting as it matures. As a juvenile, it will have a beige body with pale yellow spots but when it reaches adulthood, it will have a smoky brown body and fins with yellow overtones from the midline upward. A bright white vertical stripe runs along the base of its caudal fin. Its most distinguishing features, however, are the brightly colored spots on its face and forehead resembling freckles.
Generally peaceful, it is recommended to keep only one Tang per your reef or fish-only aquarium, as it can become aggressive towards others of their own species. Provide rockwork and a lot of swimming area, in an aquarium at least 250 gallons for this size of Tang.
This member of the Acanthurinae family is an herbivore. Although it may eat meaty foods along with other fish in an aquarium, it is important to offer the Black Eared Tang plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. Algae based diets are important for its overall health and longevity and should be fed regularly. High quality flake and pellet foods will also be accepted.
